Accessibility Plan

Commitment

Shelter Canadian Properties Limited is committed to identifying, removing and preventing barriers for persons with disabilities when accessing properties that are managed by Shelter Canadian or when accessing services that are provided by Shelter Canadian.

As part of a multi-year accessibility plan, Shelter Canadian will continually assess and update its policies and practices in order to ensure compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.

Customer Service

Shelter Canadian is committed to treating persons with disabilities in a manner that allows them to maintain their dignity and independence and will comply with all accessibility and human rights legislation.  Ongoing assessment and feedback will be used to continuously enhance our customer service practices.

Information and Communications

Upon request, Shelter Canadian will provide accessible formats and communication supports for persons with a disability.

Persons with a disability may use their personal assistive devices when accessing services and facilities which are provided by Shelter Canadian. If the assistive device presents a significant and unavoidable health and safety concern or may not be permitted for other reasons, every effort will be made to facilitate access by alternative means.

Shelter Canadian does not discriminate against people who require a service animal in order to access its services or facilities, based on the definition of a service animal that is included in provincial human rights legislation. Employees of Shelter Canadian are guided by a Service Animals policy, in order to ensure that people with a service animal are appropriately accommodated.

A person with a disability who is accompanied by a support person will be allowed to have that person accompany them on the premises of Shelter-managed properties.

Shelter Canadian has adopted Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Employment

Shelter Canadian is committed to supporting employees with a disability by providing the accommodations which are necessary in order for them to perform their duties.  In order to ensure that accessibility needs are properly considered, the employee that is making an accommodation request will be consulted and an individualized accommodation plan will be developed.

Accommodation training is provided to employees, supervisors and managers who are responsible for the recruitment, training and supervision of employees.

Shelter Canadian has also designed accommodations for safe return-to-work from injury or illness, including modified duties and graduated work schedules.

Training

Shelter Canadian is committed to training its employees to recognize when and how to respond to the needs of persons with a disability who are accessing Shelter-managed services or facilities.

Employees are required to review the Accessibility and Human Rights policies that have been developed by Shelter Canadian.

Shelter Canadian will respond to all accessibility related feedback and/or concerns as a means of monitoring and enhancing, as necessary, the training that is provided to its employees.
